Here we see an animation that shows the relation between these two quantities:

  • The slope of the x vs. t graph.
  • The value of the velocity.

The object always starts at the same position, 0.0 m. It moves away from that starting position with a constant velocity. Each of the object's velocities is constant. The velocity changes in value from +6.0 m/s to -6.0 m/s. The constant acceleration is always 0.0 m/s2. So, none of the velocities change as time passes.

This XVA demonstration is set up for xo = 0.0 m and vo = 6.0 m/s. You can change this starting velocity to other values, (keeping the acceleration at 0.0 m/s2), to see situations similar to those shown in this animation.

Comments:

  • The slope of the object's x vs. t graph is the velocity of the object.
  • When the velocity is large and positive, the slope of the x vs. t graph is large and positive.
  • When the velocity is small and positive, the slope of the x vs. t graph is small and positive.
  • When the velocity is zero, the slope of the x vs. t graph is zero.
  • When the velocity is small and negative, the slope of the x vs. t graph is small and negative.
  • When the velocity is large and negative, the slope of the x vs. t graph is large and negative.
